Bukhara, one of the oldest cities in Uzbekistan, sits atop a sacred hill and is hailed by UNESCO as the most well-preserved medieval Central Asian town. It once thrived as a major center on the Great Silk Road and was renowned as a hub of learning in the Islamic world.
The city's name, derived from the Sanskrit word "vihara," meaning "monastery," reflects its historical significance. Bukhara boasts over 350 mosques, 100 religious colleges, and more than 140 architectural monuments dating back to the Middle Ages. Highlights include the Poi Kalon complex, featuring the 46.5-meter Kalon Minaret and the expansive Kalon Mosque, which once accommodated up to 12,000 people. The Ark fortress, a former royal residence and the oldest structure in Bukhara, and the Chashma Ayub mausoleum, associated with the prophet Job’s miraculous water source, are also must-see landmarks.
