Why Visit Sicily's Castelbuono

Make sure to visit the town of Castelbuono in southern Italy during your next Italian getaway. Located in Sicily, it is best known for the castle bearing the same name, around which the town was established. However, it is not the only landmark worth visiting, as the town is full of authentic architecture, historical monuments, and a colorful world of gastronomy which will make you want to explore Italy even more.

Start your Castelbuono sightseeing by strolling around the beautiful narrow streets of the old town. The well preserved medieval architecture will take you back in time, as this postcard-like scenery is definitely one-of-a-kind.

The Castelbuono Castle amid it all, also known as Castello dei Ventimiglia, is presumably the main monument of the city, making it a must-see while in the area. Dating back to the 14th century, the imposing castle was built by Francesco I Ventimiglia, featuring displays on local archaeology and history. Another historical landmark on site is the impressive Baroque chapel dedicated to St. Anne. Decorated with marbles and exquisite stuccowork, the chapel dates back to the 17th century and houses an urn with the skull of the saint.

Some other landmarks to visit include numerous sublime churches, such as the Church Matrice Vecchia and the Church Matrice Nuova. The first one was built back in the 14th century, while the latter one arose between the 16th and 17th centuries; however, both are now significant stops on a Castelbuono itinerary.

So is the Church of San Francesco, dating back to the 4th century! The splendid ensemble of the mausoleum, marble portal, nave, and other beautiful buildings on site will surely leave a lasting impression on you. While in the church, make sure to also admire one of the three oldest pipe organs of Italy, built in 1547.

A crucial part of Castelbuono travel is sampling the local cuisine. It is no surprise that food is amazing anywhere in Italy, however, tasting the gastronomical wonders in Castelbuono is an exceptional experience. The town offers a wide range of products specific to the area, such as vegetables, meat, olive oil, cheese, and honey.

While on a Casterbuono tour, don't miss the chance to taste the stuffed aubergines, stuffed sun-dried tomatoes, and egg croquettes. For those with a sweet tooth, Easter Dove Cake and Testa di Turco are just the specialties you need.

Castelbuono is a one-of-a-kind place with everything you need for a perfect Sicily vacation. It provides numerous sights for exploring, cultural events throughout the year, and a celebration for your taste buds. It is a town worth noting down on your bucket list for sure!
