Why Visit Heidelberg, Germany

Heidelberg is a charming town in Baden-Württemberg, nestled on the banks of the Neckar River. The first written mention of the hub is found in the records of the Schonau Abbey and dates back to 1196.

Historically, Heidelberg has served as the town of philosophers and students as in all times people have headed here for new inspiration and knowledge. The town influenced the lives and works of such great figures as Jean Paul and Mark Twain, Johann Goethe and Osip Mandelstam. So if Heidelberg has attracted people of such scale, it is definitely worth being on your travel agenda, right?

Undoubtedly, Heidelberg is a true open-air museum with its cozy streets and tiled roofs, contrasting with the calm colors of the surrounding nature. The main attractions of Heidelberg are concentrated in the old part of the town. If you love peaceful walks around the city, it's a must to visit Hauptstrasse. Being the longest pedestrian street not only in Heidelberg but in whole Germany, Hauptstrasse won't let you feel bored as it swarms with shops, bars traditional restaurants and cafes.

Germany is the country of castles and the town of Heidelberg is not an exception. The Heidelberg Castle (Schloss) is absolutely stunning, set on the hill 300 feet above the city and being among the most remarkable Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. The Castle has been demolished several times in its history but rebuilt again and again, that's why the structure combines some features of Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance.

One more important hallmark of the town, along with the Castle, is Heidelberg University. The campuses of this legendary university are scattered around the town, however, the most outstanding one is the main building, Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat Heidelberg. Built in Baroque style, it houses a museum and an old punishment cell, where students were sent for dueling, drunkenness, and other misdemeanors.

For those, interested in religious sights, Heidelberg is home to a number of beautiful churches. The most impressive ones are the Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche) and the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche).
