The jewel of the region, Meteora, is without a doubt a "must" during Kalambaka travel. This awe-inspiring site consists of six monasteries perched high on stately pinnacles, overlooking the surroundings. Built by monks back in the 11th century, it is the perfect blend of man-made wonders and splendid nature, and it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

There are several ways to reach the monasteries, such as riding a cable car or climbing the steps carved by monks. However, visitors to Kalambaka should definitely consider adding a hike to Meteora to their itinerary. Offering postcard-like views of the scenic landscapes, hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the area, along with rock climbing and even rafting in the nearby Aspropotamos River.

In addition to the fun outdoor pursuits, make sure to visit the magnificent Church of the Virgin Mary. Dating back to the 11th century, the church features an intricately decorated interior and remarkable Byzantine frescoes.
