About Santorini

Why Visit Santorini Island, Greece

Beautifully set in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is one of the most renowned Greek islands, celebrated for its stunning landscapes and rich history. Shaped by a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, the island, officially known as Thira, spans just 90 square kilometers. Despite its small size, Santorini is home to several charming towns that draw visitors from all over the world.

One of the most popular towns is Fira, the island's capital, perched high on the cliffs. Fira offers breathtaking views of the surrounding smaller islands and the beautiful boats that dot the Aegean waters. The town's picturesque setting and vibrant atmosphere make it a must-visit for anyone exploring Santorini.

Another iconic location is Oia, known for its stunning sunsets and signature panoramas. Oia's white-walled buildings, blue-domed churches, and windmills, all arranged in a staircase-like fashion on the dark cliffs, create an unforgettable contrast against the deep blues of the sea and sky. The narrow, winding streets of Oia, with their tiny stairs and hidden corners, invite visitors to explore and discover beautiful vistas at every turn. This UNESCO-listed World Heritage site is a highlight of any Santorini tour.

Interestingly, many of the buildings on Santorini's cliff sides are fully or partially carved out of the volcanic rock, reminiscent of ancient cave towns. Given Santorini's hot summer weather, hauling rocks and building materials up the steep cliffs was an immense challenge. The island's donkeys played a crucial role in this effort, transporting goods and helping to build the towns. Today, while these donkeys mostly carry tourists, they remain a significant part of Santorini's cultural heritage. Each donkey even has an official passport issued by the Greek government and a retirement pension to ensure its well-being after "retirement." Remarkably, there are more donkeys on the island than there are people, and a similar ratio exists between the number of local churches and other buildings.

No visit to Santorini is complete without spending time on its unique beaches, particularly the famous black sand beach. This beach, with its sand of volcanic ash origin, is one of the most unusual and striking spots on the island, offering a distinctive experience for beachgoers. Whether you're exploring the island's towns or relaxing on its shores, Santorini promises a memorable journey filled with breathtaking sights and rich cultural experiences.
