Start your Valletta tour at one of the most impressive monuments in the area, the City Gate. Designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, it is actually the fifth edition of the gate standing at the entrance to the city. The first one was built back in the 17th century, however, rebuilt after numerous destructions, the landmark as we see it now was only completed in 2014. The City Gate is located in between the St. James' and St. John's Bastions and surrounded by the City Walls, comprising a truly significant ensemble in the city.

Another point of interest undoubtedly worth exploring is the magnificent St. John's Co-Cathedral. Dating back to the 16th century, the imposing Baroque church features a rather plain facade, however, once inside you will be amazed by the lavish interior. Every inch of the church is scrupulously embellished by ornaments, the walls are decorated with paintings and the marble floor depicts the life of the of St John the Baptist. The monument is extraordinary, to say the least.

Continue your Valletta travel by exploring the museum scene of the city. Some of the most popular ones include the National Museum of Archaeology and Fort St. Elmo & National War Museum. The latter one is a former fort built by knights, dating back to the 16th century, which now houses numerous exhibitions related to the war history of Malta. In the National Museum of Archeology, you can also get acquainted with the history of the area, however, from a rather different perspective.

Other landmarks definitely worth including to your Valletta itinerary are the Grand Master's Palace, the former residence of the Knights of St. John, and the monumental Parliament Building.
