Xian is an ancient Chinese town with more than 3,000 years of history. The original city has existed since the 11th century and was established in 202, just northwest of present-day Xian.
Known as the "Walled City of Chang'an," Xian was the capital of the Xi Han dynasty and became an important center of Central Asian trade. Its prestige endured even after the downfall of the Tang Empire.
A must-visit on your Xian tour is the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, a funerary pottery housing figurines of the Qin Shi Emperor.
Another landmark is the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a Buddhist pagoda built in 589 A.D. with layers of bricks, significant to the Tang dynasty and home to the sutras brought from India by Xuanzang.
Also worth mentioning is the Great Mosque, one of the oldest and largest Islamic mosques in China, built in 742 A.D. It uniquely blends traditional Chinese architecture with Islamic art.
