Visit The Mysterious Bran (Dracula's) Castle

While touring Romania, don't miss the chance to visit one of the most unique sights in the country, the iconic Bran Castle. Surrounded by myths and legends, it is often called Dracula's Castle because of the resemblance to the one depicted by Bram Stoker in his horror novel.

Dating back to the 13th century, the castle was first built as a fortress by the Teutonic Knights in order to defend the border of Transylvania. It was rebuilt as castle a century later and became the property of numerous rulers throughout the years.

One of the most significant ones was Queen Maria of Romania who has received the town of Bran along with the castle in 1920. The Queen restored the castle and turned it into a summer residence, adding several buildings to the site, as well as a park and a tea house.

Situated atop a hill and surrounded by a river and lush forests, it was the perfect place for a royal residence which is currently open as a museum. Featuring an authentic interior, it provides with possibilities to explore the original furniture, some of Queen Maria's belongings, and other displays.

As you might have guessed, the castle also boasts the story of Dracula, the Count of Transylvania. Interestingly, the novel was written using solely a description of Bran Castle since the author himself had never stepped foot on the premises. However, a growing number of people visit the beautiful historic site each year because of the myth of Dracula and his castle.
