When it comes to traveling abroad, it is advisable to have a few coins in the local currency for small expenses, such as tipping or souvenirs. However, most destinations nowadays allow you to use cards without encountering any difficulties, and Norway is no exception.

Although the name of the currency for Norway, the Norwegian krone, is translated as "a crown", recently cash has been overthrown form the leading positions of payment. Of course, having some cash with you, just in case, is a wise idea but still, you’ll probably be glad to know that most places easily accept debit and credit cards, including restaurants, hotels, and shops.

However, here’s a tricky thing about the cards that you should know in order to avoid unpleasant situations and inconveniences. When it comes to making payments in Norway, some establishments, a small number but still, do not accept foreign credit cards. Debit cards, on the other hand, are more widespread and commonly accepted.

Moreover, you most likely won’t have any troubles whatsoever when paying for things in Norway with Visa and MasterCard while American Express is not so popular in both Norway and Scandinavia in general. Anyway, if you have any doubts, you can always ask an assistant before starting your shopping.

Plus, it is recommendable to check with your bank back at home before you begin your travel to find out if there will be any additional bank fees for charges made in a currency that is different from yours, for example, for payments made in Norwegian Krone to USD.
