Marvel at the Awe-inspiring Popes' Palace
Explore the Popes' Palace, the biggest Gothic palace in the entire world. Built on the shores of the River Rhone, the imposing landmark, called Palais des Papes in French, dates back to the 14th century and actually consists of two conjoined palaces, the Palais Vieux, built under the rule of Benedict XII, and Palais Neuf, expanded by Clement VI. Listed as Heritage for Humanity by UNESCO, the site also boasts several towers and lavishly decorated chambers.
With floor space of 15,000 square meters (161,459 square feet), the Popes' Palace is a major point of interest, attracting over half a million of visitors per year, as well as a venue for numerous art exhibitions. The grand monument also features fresco-decorated chapels of Saint-Martial and Saint John along with the Consistory Hall, currently open as a museum.
Bear in mind that large backpacks are not permitted inside the Avignon Papal Palace and there might be metal detectors at the entrance for security reasons.
