Birka is a charming old town situated on the Swedish island Björkö, right in the middle of lake Mälaren. It was established in eighth century, and at that time it was the central hub and most important Viking trading settlement in the entire Mälar Valley. Today, Birka is an exceptionally well-preserved testimony to the wide-ranging trade network established by the Vikings during the two centuries of their phenomenal economic and political expansion. Moreover, this Viking town is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, known all over the Europe. There are many things to see here and to be amused by: the main must-sees are the Birka Viking Museum and the ancient fields that still keep all the best Viking secrets, and of course the breathtaking landscape of Björkö island is an unforgettable experience.
