Why See the Church of the Savior on blood

Standing along the Griboedov Canal, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg (also referred to as the Church of the Resurrection) was built in honor of Alexander II who was assassinated in 1881. The church is located on the place where a young man who opposed Alexander's reforms threw a bomb into the Tsar's carriage.

The construction was funded by the imperial family with the support of many private donors. It took more than 20 years to build the church, which was completed in 1907.

The Savior on Spilled Blood has a similar architectural style to that of the St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. The 5 onion-domes of the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood are covered in jeweler's enamel. Moreover, it is decorated with hundreds of semiprecious stones such as topaz, jasper, mountain crystal and Italian limestone. Multicolored and breathtaking, the church stands out from other buildings in Saint Petersburg.

The mosaics based on the paintings of Vasnetsov, Nesterol, and Vrubel both on the inside and on the outside of the church, covering 23130 square feet, is one of the biggest collections of mosaic in Europe. 20 granite plates depicting the major events of Alexander II's reign also decorate the exterior of gorgeous church.

Nevertheless, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood has sadly undergone severe damages during World War II and it took 27 years to restore it.
