Visit Fisherman's Bastion

One of the main landmarks and a must-see while on a Budapest tour is the Fisherman's Bastion. Built on the ruins of what was once a castle, the imposing monument has never been used as an actual fortification, however, stands to this day as a significant piece of architectural heritage in the city.

Fisherman's Bastion history & facts

The construction of the Neo-Romanesque masterpiece started in 1895 to mark the millennium of Hungary's existence. It was designed by Frigyes Schulek who wanted to create an open space for people to admire the scenic surroundings. Located on a hill, the Fisherman's Bastion offers beautiful views of the Danube River and entire Budapest likewise.

Other picturesque features include seven fairytale-like turrets representing the seven Magyar tribes that once ruled the land. It also boasts a beautiful statue of Stephen I, the first King of Hungary, and numerous other decorations.
