The Enriching Galleria dell'Accademia

Housing impressive collections of numerous world-known artists, such as the sculptor Sandro Botticelli, Andrea del Sarto and more, Galleria dell'Accademia is a stop that should definitely appear on your Florence itinerary.

Established by Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine back in the 18th century, it opened its doors as an additional facility for students of the Academy of Fine Arts. With the collections of artwork growing bigger rapidly, it eventually turned into a gallery.

Most of the exhibits were gathered by the Medici family who received a huge part of it from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The one-of-a-kind displays present some of the most prominent pieces dating hundreds of years back.

The Gallery of the Academy of Florence is actually best known for Michelangelo and his artwork. His renowned statue of David attracts a growing number of visitors each year, however, there are more historic pieces of artistry to see, such as the "Prisoners" or the "Statue of St. Matthew".
