The Historic Kazan Kremlin

Don't miss the chance to visit the authentic Kazan Kremlin while discovering Russia. Being the only Tatar fortress which remained in the country, it boasts beautiful architecture along with a one-of-a-kind history, making it a must-visit in Kazan.

Dating back to the Islamic period of Volga Bulgaria, the territory later belonged to the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate. After the defeat of the Kazan Khanate, Ivan the Terrible overtook the city in the 16th century and ordered to build a citadel on the location of the former Tartar fortress. Nowadays, the white limestone walls of the citadel and its numerous significant constructions are the most visited landmark in Kazan and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The most exceptional monument on site is, undoubtedly, the magnificent Kul Sharif Mosque. Bearing the name of the national Tatar hero, it is actually the biggest mosque in entire Russia. It was completed in 2005 and currently offers a collection of artifacts depicting the history of Islam in the area.

Another landmark of great significance on the territory of Kremlin is the leaning Syuyumbeki's Tower. Legends surround the imposing tower, however, the real date of its construction is still debatable.

Some other landmarks worth exploring in the Kazan Kremlin include the Presidential Palace, the ornate Annunciation Cathedral, the Museum Complex, and the Spasskaya Tower.
