Mtskheta, Georgia

The Georgian city Mtskheta is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Dating before 1,000 BC it was once the capital of the early Kingdom of Iberia (today’s Eastern Georgia) and an important ancient trading route. Mtskheta is also the religious center of the country. The ‘Holy City’ brims over with historical monuments and ruins representing the mystical significance in Georgian culture.

Among all these valued legacies is the Jvari Monastery located at the precipice of a vertical side-cliff. It is a remarkable and important pilgrimage site, a sacred landmark and the most ancient cult monument constructed in the beginning of Georgian Christianity in the 6th century. Another must-see is the Georgian architectural masterpiece Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. It was built on the grave of Sidonia - who was believed to be buried with Christ's robe and was the site for coronation and burial of Georgian kings. Today’s Cathedral was established in the 11th century and serves as the seat of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia.

Stroll this laid back and old fashioned town filled with Georgian spiritual vibe.
