Why Visit Roskilde City in Denmark
Roskilde is one of Denmark's oldest cities located 30 km west of Copenhagen on the island of Zealand. The city has a long history dating from the pre-Christian Viking Age and was even the capital of the country until 1443.
Roskilde Cathedral
Tourists come to Roskilde to see the main 12th-century cathedral in Denmark which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Apart from being a unique historical monument, there are chapels on the south and north sides of Roskilde Domkirke Cathedral which house 39 tombs of the Danish monarchs.
Roskilde Festival
Today the town is also famous for being the home to the four-day Roskilde Festival, arguably the best European rock festival.
Viking Ship Museum
Nevertheless, if hordes of rock stars aren't pillaging the town, the excellent Viking Ship Museum is another prime attraction in Roskilde, featuring five ships discovered at the bottom of the fjord.
