Why Visit Sweden's Royal Opera House
The Royal Opera House is Sweden's premier stage for opera and ballet in Stockholm. Founded by Gustav III it dates back to the 18th century and is situated in the heart of the city, right by the Gustav Adolf Square.
It was also used as the site for public masquerade balls, inspired by the ones of Paris, during one of which King Gustav III himself was assassinated in the opera house. Inspired by the event, Giuseppe Verdi wrote his famous opera Un Ballo in Maschera, which depicts not only the cruelties but the Royal Opera House as well.
You can get a ticket to a show at The Royal Opera House or only take a tour backstage. In case you are not a classical music fan, you can definitely still enjoy the building! The interior of the Opera tells the story of Sweden’s cultural history and showcases a beautiful Neo-Baroque staircase, foyer, and auditorium, while the exterior features the neo-Renaissance style. The beauty of the building inside and out will amaze you.
Providing with new pieces each year as well as the classics, the Royal Opera House is a perfect blend of a museum, architectural sight, and an unforgettable musical experience.
