The Royal Theater was founded in 1748, first serving as the theater of the king, and then as that of the country. The theater offers three main venues: the Opera House, the Playhouse, and the Old Stage. The latter one was largely used to perform opera and ballet pieces, however, it was not suitable for spoken drama, thus the playhouse was built.
The theater presents opera, the Royal Danish Ballet, classical music concerts (by the Royal Danish Orchestra, which dates back to 1448), and drama in several locations. Starting with a staff of only fifteen performers, it grew to be the magnificent hub of culture we admire now.
