The Extraordinary Sao Bento Train Station

Located in the heart of the city, the Sao Bento railway station is truly a one-of-a-kind stop on any Porto tour. Depicting the history of Portugal, it features a unique display of over 20 000 traditional azulejo ceramic tiles.

History

The station was named after the Benedictine Monastery called Convent of Sao Bento da Ave Maria that was once situated in the location. Dating back to the 16th century, the imposing building of the monastery was rebuilt in the Beaux-Arts style in the 19th century and turned into a true piece of art by the architect Jose Marques da Silva.

Interior

However, the interior of the station is what really makes it an exceptional example of architectural heritage in the city. Ornamented in great detail, the authentic glazed tiles, called azujelos, cover the walls inside, providing numerous images of Portuguese customs, history, and culture.

Take your time to walk around the main hall and admire the history of transportation on the frieze, as well as scenes of war or images of every-day life on the walls. The artistry of making this type of ceramic wonders in Portugal dates back hundreds of years, and as for this exact project, it took a little over a decade for the artist Jorge Colaco to finish painting all the tiles.

The Sao Bento Rail Station is a must-visit place while on Portugal tour, thus don't miss the chance to marvel at the unique beauty of it with your own eyes.
