Why Visit Shamakhi in Azerbaijan
Explore Shamakhi - an ancient Azerbaijan city that dates back to the 5th century BC. In the 9th -16th centuries it was the capital of Shirvan Empire, a residence of Shirvan Dynasty and is by right considered one of the most beautiful cities of the Orient.
In the mid-18th century, it used to be the center of Shamakhi Khanate.
Today it is a recognized center of wine-making and carpet weaving. Furthermore, it is known as the root of Azerbaijani literature.
One of the most renowned places in the city is the Juma Mosque of Shamakhi also called the Friday Mosque of Shamakhi that dates back to 734-744.
Considered the landmark of Shamakhi, it is the only building that withstood eleven giant earthquakes.
What is more, the unique Yeddi Gumbaz mausoleum - a preserved site of three mausoleums from “Yeddi Gumbaz” group is located in this ancient city.
This architectural monument is a very symbolic place as it was built for the family of Mustafa khan - the last khan of Shamakhi.
