Why Visit the Shirvanshahs' Palace

The Shirvanshahs' Palace is situated on the highest hill of the historical core of Baku "Ichari Shahar". Often called "Frozen on the stones symphony", "Sleeping swan" or "Pearl of the Caspian Sea" it is one of the most beautiful national values of Azerbaijan. It is actually even depicted on the local banknotes!

Dating back to the 1400s, the complex is made up by the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the Shah's mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's mausoleum, Murad's Gate, a reservoir, and the remnants of the bath-house. The palace itself used to consist of 52 rooms, some of which were later destroyed, however, it still features a throne room resembling an actual King's room. There are also numerous other areas, spaces, exhibitions, and artifacts to explore on the site.

Actually, it was believed to be a memorial complex built around a sacred place of worship and a tomb of a saint. The wells inside the grounds of the palace were considered to have healing qualities, as was the hill where the palace was built. The building was also used as a royal palace.

Enjoy the Shirvanshahs' Palace and the ancient architecture in Azerbaijan!
