Why Visit the Arctic Cathedral, Tromso

Thinking about treating yourself to a Scandinavian trip? Visit Norway on your next flight overseas and make sure to spend some time at the Arctic Cathedral!

The Arctic Cathedral, or the Tromsdalen Church, is a parish church that was built in 1965 using plans drawn up by a Norwegian architect, Jan Inge Hovig, and has a capacity of 600 people. The beautiful shape of the cathedral is purely geometric, with the exterior design being made up of 11 triangles, all with varying dimensions, which gives the Cathedral a modern look. As for the interior of the building, the cement triangular walls that connect at the ceiling point create the commonplace for all cathedrals high ceiling, thus keeping true to the tradition, while remaining modern.

One of the most notable things about the interior design of the Cathedral is the stunning glass mosaic on the eastern side that was added in 1972. The mosaic is a prominent work of Victor Sparre and it depicts a human figure in an upright position with their arms to both sides, surrounded by blue and yellow mosaic pieces. When the light shines through the mosaic is when you witness the true beauty of the artwork.

Paying a visit to the Arctic Cathedral whilst on your Norwegian trip will be an excellent addition to your travel itinerary, so don't put it aside and get planning with Triptile!
