The British Museum, London

Located in London, England, the British Museum is a public institution dedicated to the study of human history, art, and culture. Due to its collection's wide range of works during the time of the British Empire, the institution has one of the largest and most comprehensive permanent collections in existence. The collection tells the story of human civilization from its beginning to the present day. This is the first museum of its kind to have opened to the public. A rich collection of Sir Hans Sloane works, an Anglo-Irish physician, and scientist, led to the founding of the Museum in 1753.

In 1759, the museum first opened to the public at Montagu House, where it is now located. In the subsequent 250 years, the museum expanded very rapidly due largely to British colonization, resulting in several branch institutions, the first being the Natural History Museum in 1881. British Museum opened its Reading Room and building in the same year as the now-separated British Library, but the library department was still housed there until 1997 when the British Library Act 1972 separated it from the museum.
