One of the most beautiful bridges in Europe and a one-of-a-kind monument in the Czech Republic, Charles Bridge is a must-visit during your Prague tour. The medieval stone bridge has become one of the best-known symbols of the beautiful capital, attracting a growing number of travelers each year.
The imposing stone bridge is 516 meters (1693 ft) long and connects the picturesque Old Town with the Lasser Town, locally called Mala Strana. After the collapse of the Judith Bridge during the flood in 1342, the current bridge was built in 1357 and has stood strong through every mishap ever since.
As a matter of fact, while on the bridge you can actually spot the medieval gauge measuring the level of water. Located on the wall along the right bank of the river, the small statue of Bradac (the Bearded Man) used to be the indicator of danger, as in case the water rose above it, people knew they had to leave the location.
Some other exceptional features worth taking notice of while on the bridge are the statues along its edges. One of the most famous ones is considered to be the monument to St. John of Nepomuk who, according to the legend, was thrown off the bridge because of a conflict with the government. It is said that rubbing the bronze plaque by the figure will ensure you a return to Prague. Maybe it is worth giving it a try?
