More than 130 years ago, The Geneva Water Fountain, which is still one of the largest in the world, was installed on Lake Geneva just downstream from the modern location where the Rhone River flows out of the lake. In May 1886, the first operating turbines of the future hydroelectric power station appeared here, which was fully commissioned in 1892.

In 1891, in honor of the 600th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation, by the decision of the Municipal Council, the fountain was turned into a landmark and installed in the city for public viewing. Sixty years later, in 1951, the fountain was installed at the pumping station, where it remains to this day. The pumping station works directly under the fountain and uses water from the lake itself and not from the plumbing, as it was before.

Currently, the Same-Do Fountain is exclusively a tourist attraction, it runs on electricity, and its daily maintenance costs the authorities about 1 million francs a year.

Delve into fantastic Switzerland and discover the authentic beauty of the "traveler's gates of Switzerland" – the city of Zurich, fabulous architecture of Montreux, or colorful Lucerne!
