Athens Attractions: The National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum is not only an interesting and informative attraction of Athens but is also the largest museum in Greece. Walking through the corridors, you can see more than 20 thousand exhibits representing various eras, styles, and trends. It's home to some of the best-preserved sculptures and other artifacts from ancient civilizations like Ancient Rome, Byzantium (Eastern Roman Empire), and Minoan Crete.

The history of the museum's creation

The first archaeological museum appeared in Greece (on the island of Aegina) in 1829. When the capital of the country was moved to Athens, a new building of the National Archaeological Museum was built in the city. The authors of the project were Panagis Kalkos, Ludwig Lange and Ernst Ziller. Construction took the period from 1866 to 1889. But the first exhibits of the museum began to be placed back in 1874.
