This picturesque part of Copenhagen is definitely a place a traveler should visit when in town.
Nyhavn is translated as New Port and was established by King Christian V in 1670 as a gateway from the sea to the inner city. Many of the houses surrounding the canal along the two historical quays are about 350 years old!
The canal is also packed with old wooden ships which create an unforgettable maritime atmosphere. Walking down these streets you can feel like a time-traveler who returned to 1780-1810 when Nyhavn was the main center of ship-trade in Copenhagen.
Apart from the colorful old houses on both sides of the canal, the quay is now a bustling pedestrian street with dozens of various restaurants, pubs, and cozy cafés. For this reason, Nyhavn is also called "the longest outdoor bar in Scandinavia".
Moreover, it's a very inspiring place, thus it's no surprise that the famous fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen lived here for most of his life and wrote many of his world-famous stories.
Thus, when in Copenhagen don't forget to stroll down the magnificent quays of Nyhavn!
