Park Guell is an ensemble of outstanding stone structures, remarkable mosaic tiling and beautiful buildings that is one of the most visited places in Barcelona.
Created by Antoni Gaudí in 1914, the park was commissioned by Eusebi Güell who wanted to create a stylish park for Barcelona aristocracy. In the design of Park Güell, Gaudí unleashed all his architectural genius and put into practice much of his innovative structural solutions that would later become the symbol of his organic style.
Gaudi was strongly fond of natural shapes and loved to use them in his work. Park Güell is all about the structural richness of forms and volumes. For example, the park has an incredible walkway supported by irregularly shaped rock pillars twisted spirally that seem to be growing out of the ground like tree trunks. At the entrance of the park there is also a remarkable dragon fountain decorated with bright and colorful tiling and is said to bring good luck. This imaginative, ornamental creation is a favorite tourist attraction.
At the top of Guell Park is a terraced area where you get a wonderful view of the park and of the city. Here you will also find multi-colored tiled mosaic seats.
Moreover, this UNESCO declared World Heritage Site (under “Works of Antoni Gaudí”) has a small house in which Gaudí lived in during a certain period of time. Today this house is a museum which contains interesting furniture also designed by the genius.
