Discover the splendor of Stirling Castle's Royal Court

The Castle of Stirling dominated a large volcanic rock above the River Forth, at the meeting point of Lowlands and Highlands, and was the key to the kingdom of Scotland. Over the centuries, it grew into a powerful fortress and a great royal residence. The castle changed hands eight times in 50 years during the Wars of Independence, which were civil wars between the Scots and the English.

During peace, the royal family of Scotland came to Stirling to enjoy its comforts, the superb hunting, and to hold court - the castle was often the focal point of the Scottish government.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders eventually occupied the area and it became an important military base.

In the years since the last of the soldiers left, there have been major renovation projects to make the main buildings look like they once did. Scotland's Stirling Castle is now famous throughout the world as a must-see attraction for visitors.
