Visiting the Tower of London is one of the best ways to get acquainted with the history of the area, as the fortress was once a royal palace, an armory, and even a place of execution. Apart from numerous monumental pieces of historical heritage, the Tower also boasts some spine-chilling tales and stories depicting its past, doubtlessly making it a unique addition to your London tour.
Built back in the 11th century by the order of William the Conqueror, the tower stood as a symbol of power leaving the local citizens in awe. The site was expanded even more throughout the years, adding multiple other towers and a defensive wall, as well as widening the moat.
The fortified tower was used by the Royals to protect themselves, as well as their belongings, housing the Crown Jewels to this day. It was also the site of the Royal Mint, providing coins up until the 19th century.
However, the Tower of London is often also called the "Bloody Tower" due to some horrible events that took place on the premises. Back in the 15th century, it was the location where Henry VI was murdered. In addition to that, two skeletons were excavated nearby, believed to have been the remnants of the children of Edward IV who once disappeared in the tower.
Stories of ghosts and horrifying events can still be heard around the tower, along with the legend of the ravens. It is believed that when the ravens will leave the premises, the tower will collapse along with the whole kingdom, therefore seven ravens are being taken care of each day by the Ravenmaster.
