History and collection
The Museum was opened in 1973 and consists of two buildings designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld. The collection features more than 500 paintings by Vincent van Gogh but also works of other artists, his contemporaries – Impressionists and Postimpressionists. Van Gogh's work is organized in the museum chronologically into five periods, each representing a different period of his life and art.
