York Minster, York

Visit the Magnificent York Minster Cathedral

Visiting the monumental cathedral is a crucial part of any York tour. Having stood in the city for hundreds of years, it has become one of the best-known York landmarks, as well as a place of worship for thousands of people.

History & Facts

The church as we see it now started to take shape in the 13th century, however, it was built on the remnants of buildings dating back to the 7th century. The splendid Gothic monument was expanded and restored several times throughout the years and stands to this day as one of the most significant pieces of historical heritage in York.

Exterior

Featuring an imposing stonework exterior, the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St. Peter in York, or York Minster in short, also boasts a unique display of stained glass, one of the most incredible pieces being the Five Sisters Window. Dating back to the 13th century, the window was restored in the 20th century and was dedicated to all the British women who have lost their lives during the WWI.

The Great East Window

Another masterpiece of stained glass in the church is the Great East Window created by John Thornton. Decorated in intricate detail, it is considered to be one of the greatest examples of stained glass of the medieval period. While exploring the York Minster, make sure to also pay attention to the Great West Window, featuring a heart-shaped design.
