day 3 Sydney

Sydney to Jervis Bay Scenic Route
Today you leave vibrant Sydney behind and follow one of New South Wales’ most beautiful coastal drives south toward Jervis Bay. Ocean cliffs, laid-back seaside towns, and endless beaches set the tone for a classic Australian self-drive adventure, with plenty of scenic stops to enjoy along the way.

Route tip: Take the Princess Highway (A1) south from Sydney, then branch onto the Princes Motorway. Depart by 9am to make the most of the afternoon in Jervis Bay.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Kiama – A charming coastal town built around one of the world's largest blowholes — a natural sea vent in the basalt cliffs that erupts with a roar when the swell hits right. The historic lighthouse headland offers sweeping views back up the coast toward Sydney.
Insider tip: Little Earth Roasters on Manning Street is widely regarded as the best coffee on the South Coast — an essential stop before continuing south.
The blowhole is most dramatic in a strong southerly swell. Check conditions at the lookout platform before committing to a walk — the spray can reach 20 metres on a big day.
  • Kingsford Smith Memorial Lookout (Gerroa) – Stretch your legs at this spectacular viewpoint overlooking Seven Mile Beach. The sweeping coastal panorama makes it a perfect photo stop.
Best for: A 10-minute photo stop. On a clear day you can see the Illawarra Escarpment to the north and the Shoalhaven coast stretching south. This is genuinely one of those views that makes the whole drive worthwhile.
  • Seven Mile Beach – Just below the lookout, this virtually unbroken 7-kilometre stretch of golden sand sits within a national park and has no surf club, no cafés, and almost no development — a remarkable contrast to the beaches north of Sydney. The dunes behind the beach are a protected habitat for the little tern.
Best for: 20–30 minute beach walk. Take off your shoes, feel the sand, and decompress from the city. The waves are best for experienced swimmers — a rip-prone beach, so don't swim far out.

Driving time: approx. 3–3.5 hours (around 180–200 km, depending on the route and stops).

Upon arrival, explore the short but rewarding Outer Tubes Walk, a scenic coastal trail along rugged cliffs offering dramatic ocean views and fresh sea air.

Head to Murrays Beach to cool off in its calm, turquoise waters — ideal for swimming and snorkeling in a peaceful, unspoiled setting.

day 4 Jervis Bay

Jervis Bay to Batemans Bay Scenic Drive

Today you continue your journey south along the spectacular New South Wales coastline toward Batemans Bay. With national parks, wildlife encounters, and charming seaside towns along the way, this short drive is packed with unforgettable scenery and relaxed coastal moments.

Route tip: This short drive packs in extraordinary variety — pristine national park beaches, a working harbour, and one of Australia's most iconic wildlife encounters, all within 150 km. Start early to catch the sunrise at Nelsons Beach, then work south at a relaxed pace. No need to rush — you'll be in Batemans Bay by early afternoon.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Nelsons Beach – Jervis Bay's sand is officially the whitest beach sand in the world — its brightness is used as the calibration standard for satellite imagery.
Best for: 30-minute early morning walk before the drive. The calm, south-facing bay means the water is almost always glassy at dawn. Dolphins are regularly spotted from this beach — watch the shallows along the shore.
  • Booderee National Park – One of Australia's most biodiverse national parks, jointly managed with the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community. The park encompasses beaches, heath, forests and wetlands on the southern headland of Jervis Bay — and the wildlife here is extraordinary. Kangaroos, wallabies and wombats roam freely around the campgrounds and beaches, often approaching visitors with calm curiosity.
Practical note: A small entry fee applies. Pick up a park map at the entry booth — the roads inside are unsealed but easily navigable in a standard vehicle.
  • Ulladulla Harbour – A genuine working fishing port — not a tourist town — with a relaxed foreshore, brightly painted trawlers, and some of the freshest seafood on the coast.
Best for: A 30-minute lunch stop. The Harbourside Seafood Restaurant and several takeaway fish-and-chip shops on the wharf serve locally caught fish daily.
  • Pebbly Beach – The most iconic stop on the entire South Coast drive. Eastern grey kangaroos lounge directly on the beach — on the sand, at the water's edge, sometimes wading in the shallows — in numbers that have to be seen to be believed. This is not a wildlife park or a managed experience; they simply live here, entirely wild, entirely unbothered by visitors.
Practical note: The turn-off is signposted from the Princes Highway near Bawley Point. The access road is unsealed for the last kilometre — fine for a standard car. No entry fee.

Driving time: approx. 2–2.5 hours (around 150 km, depending on the route and stops).

Arrival in Batemans Bay

Arrive in Batemans Bay in the afternoon, a laid-back coastal town beautifully positioned where the Clyde River meets the Pacific Ocean. Known for its fresh seafood and relaxed seaside atmosphere, this charming destination is the perfect place to slow down after your scenic drive.

After checking in, take a gentle stroll along the waterfront foreshore or across the Batemans Bay Bridge for lovely river and ocean views. Browse the local boutiques, enjoy a drink at a waterside café, or simply breathe in the fresh sea air as fishing boats glide across the bay.

As evening approaches, treat yourself to some of the region’s famous fresh seafood — from locally caught oysters to classic fish and chips — and soak up the easy-going coastal vibes that make Batemans Bay such a welcoming stop on your journey.

Batemans Bay to Merimbula Scenic Drive

Today, continue your journey south along the breathtaking Sapphire Coast toward Merimbula, a relaxed seaside town known for its sparkling lakes, pristine beaches, and laid-back coastal charm.

Route tip: This leg transitions from the NSW South Coast into the Sapphire Coast — the landscape becomes lusher and the towns more scattered. The three stops today are very different in character: a quirky heritage village, a dramatic coastal lookout, and a perfectly preserved National Trust township.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Mogo Village – A former gold rush settlement that reinvented itself as a crafts and antiques village, Mogo has a pleasantly eccentric character — heritage shopfronts housing art galleries, leather workers, wood turners, and boutiques.
Unexpected highlight: Mogo Wildlife Park sits on the edge of the village and houses lions, white lions, giraffes, meerkats, and white rhinos — a genuinely surprising wildlife encounter tucked into the South Coast bushland. It's particularly good for families and wildlife enthusiasts who want something beyond kangaroos.
  • Narooma – Narooma is one of the most dramatically situated towns on the coast, perched above a bar where the Wagonga Inlet meets the sea. Australia Rock — a sea-eroded boulder with a map of Australia-shaped hole worn through it — is the famous photo stop, but the real draw is the panoramic view from the headland over the inlet and open ocean.
Montague Island: 9 km offshore, this nature reserve is home to one of Australia's largest colonies of little penguins, plus fur seals and migratory seabirds. Guided boat tours depart from Narooma wharf — book ahead if including this as an optional activity. The island is particularly rewarding in autumn when penguin numbers are high.
  • Central Tilba – Australia's most intact 19th-century timber village — a single street of original weatherboard buildings, unchanged since the 1890s gold rush era, backed by the dramatic green dome of Mount Gulaga (sacred to the Yuin people). The National Trust protects every building and the village has no mobile phone coverage — intentionally preserved in a kind of suspended time. The ABC Cheese Factory has been operating continuously since 1891, producing cloth-matured cheddars and flavoured varieties. A tasting session and a round of cheese to take on the road is a quintessential Tilba experience.
Best for: 1-hour stop. Browse the handful of artisan shops, try the cheese, and walk to the far end of the street for the mountain view. The village pub — The Dromedary Hotel — is one of the great character pubs of NSW if a cold drink is warranted.

Driving time: approx. 3–3.5 hours (around 180–200 km, depending on the route and stops).

Merimbula to Lakes Entrance Scenic Drive

Today, continue your journey west along the scenic South Gippsland and East Gippsland routes toward the tranquil waters of Lakes Entrance, where the Gippsland Lakes meet the Southern Ocean.

Route tip: The drive transitions from the Sapphire Coast into East Gippsland — the coastline becomes more rugged, wetlands appear alongside quiet estuaries, and the towns are smaller and less developed.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Tambo River Lookout – Pause for panoramic views over the Tambo River and surrounding wetlands. A peaceful spot to stretch your legs, enjoy the scenery, and spot local birdlife.
Best for: make a short stop to stretch your legs and enjoy birdwatching. Morning light is ideal for photos over the wetlands.
  • Nyerimilang Heritage Park – Explore this historic estate overlooking the lakes. Wander through manicured gardens, enjoy a short bushwalk, and take in sweeping views of the lakes and surrounding forests.
  • Lake Tyers Beach – A serene detour to one of the region’s quiet coastal beaches. Perfect for a short walk along the sand, watching the waves, or simply relaxing with the ocean breeze. Ideal for a quiet 20–30 minute walk along the sand. Wear comfortable shoes — the beach is natural and largely untouched.
  • Lakes Entrance Main Beach – Arrive in the heart of Lakes Entrance and enjoy a stroll along the golden sands where the lakes meet the ocean. Stop at a café overlooking the waterfront or take in the calm beauty of the area before checking in.

Driving time: approx. 3–3.5 hours (around 180–200 km, depending on the route and stops).

day 7 Lakes Entrance

Lakes Entrance to Wilsons Promontory Scenic Drive

Today you leave the tranquil shores of the Gippsland Lakes behind and journey west toward the wild and rugged beauty of Wilsons Promontory.

Route tip: The longest drive of the trip, but also the most scenically varied — thermal springs, a towering waterfall, surreal sand dunes, and one of Victoria's great national parks, all in one day. Depart by 8:30am and take the South Gippsland Highway west.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Metung Hot Springs – A beautifully designed geothermal bathing facility set among native gardens in the small lake-side village of Metung. The mineral-rich thermal waters — drawn from deep aquifers beneath the Gippsland plains — range from warm relaxation pools to hotter therapeutic baths.
Best for: A 45-minute morning soak before the long drive. The combination of warm water, cool morning air, and birdsong in the surrounding bush is a very particular pleasure. Towels and robes available for hire on site.
Practical note: Book ahead — the pools are popular on weekends. A café on site serves breakfast and good coffee for the road.
  • Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve – Victoria's highest single-span waterfall — a 59-metre drop through a steep, fern-lined gorge in a quiet roadside reserve. The falls are fed by the Agnes River and are most powerful in autumn and winter when rainfall is higher, making a May visit particularly rewarding.
Insider tip: A second, lower track leads down to the base of the falls for a more immersive view — allow 30 extra minutes if conditions are dry and you want the full experience.
  • Big Drift Sand Dunes – A vast field of wind-sculpted sand dunes rising improbably from the coastal heath just north of the Prom's national park boundary. The Big Drift is one of the largest coastal dune systems in Victoria — the dunes move slowly inland each year and periodically swallow the surrounding scrubland.
  • Squeaky Beach – Located within Wilsons Promontory National Park, this iconic beach is famous for the fine quartz sand that “squeaks” beneath your feet.
Wildlife note: Wombats are commonly seen on the walking track to the beach, particularly at dusk. The Prom's wombats are famously bold and may approach for a look — keep a respectful distance but they rarely run.
Best for: 45-minute walk and beach time. The track from Tidal River car park is 2.7 km return on a well-formed path — easy walking. Combine with a short detour to Norman Beach on the way out for a different perspective on the coastline.
  • Mount Oberon – If you’re up for a rewarding hike, ascend Mount Oberon for spectacular 360-degree views over the Prom’s rugged coastline, islands, and forested hills.
Timing note: If departing Lakes Entrance early, there is time for the Oberon summit in late afternoon — the light at dusk over the Prom is extraordinary. However, given the long drive day, this is best offered as an optional activity for energetic travellers rather than a scheduled stop.

Driving time: approx. 4–4.5 hours (around 300-350 km, depending on the route and stops).

Phillip Island to Melbourne Scenic Drive

Today marks the final leg of your epic Aussie self-drive adventure, as you leave the island charm of Phillip Island behind and head toward the vibrant streets of Melbourne. Though the distance is short, this stretch is packed with scenic highlights, wildlife encounters, and relaxed coastal vibes – the perfect way to ease out of your road trip before diving into the city buzz.

Route tip: The final and shortest drive of the trip — a relaxed transition from island life to city life. Take the Bass Highway north from Phillip Island, cross the bridge into San Remo, then follow the South Gippsland Highway and ultimately the Monash Freeway into Melbourne.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Bass Coast Rail Trail – A converted coastal railway line that runs through rolling farmland and clifftop heath between Wonthaggi and Kilcunda. The Kilcunda end of the trail crosses a dramatic trestle bridge above the Bass Strait cliffs — one of the most photographed spots on the Bass Coast.
Best for: A 30-minute walk from the Kilcunda end. The old Kilcunda pub serves good coffee if you need a morning pick-me-up.
Practical note: Park at the Kilcunda picnic area just off the highway. The trail surface is gravel and suitable for walking or cycling — no fees or permits required.
  • San Remo – The small fishing town of San Remo sits at the mainland end of the Phillip Island bridge — a natural last stop before heading north to Melbourne. Every day at noon, the local fishermen conduct a free pelican feeding on the foreshore wharf, drawing 30–50 of the enormous birds in a chaotic, photogenic spectacle that's been running for decades.
The San Remo Fisherman's Co-operative is widely regarded as serving the best fish and chips in Victoria — freshly caught fish sold directly by the fishermen who caught it, battered and fried to order.
Timing note: Aim to arrive by 11:45am to secure a good spot for the feeding at noon. Allow 1 hour total for lunch and the feeding — you'll still be in Melbourne by mid-afternoon.

Driving time: approx. 2–2.5 hours (around 140-150 km, depending on the route and stops).
