Secrets of Soviet Vilnius
Uncover the complex layers of Lithuania's Soviet past on this immersive walking tour through Vilnius. For nearly 50 years, Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union — a time of fear and hardship, but also of resistance, resilience, and quiet rebellion. This tour invites you to explore both the everyday absurdities and deeper struggles of life behind the Iron Curtain.
Meet your guide at Vilnius Town Hall and make your way through the former Jewish Quarter and into a local market where little has changed since Soviet times — except the prices. Taste authentic black bread and salted bacon, staples that sustained people during the harshest periods. Along the way, you’ll discover how Vilnius residents adapted, resisted, and survived — from secret jokes that could land you in prison to ingenious rituals of daily life.
The tour continues through Soviet apartment blocks, quirky cultural remnants, and a unique former union palace turned skate park and nightclub. You’ll stop at a Soviet-style eatery to sample nostalgic dishes once reserved for special occasions — including savory pastries, traditional soup, and a glass of local beer. You’ll also visit Vilnius’ Wedding Palace to learn about marriage, romance, and social life under Soviet rule, before ending at the haunting former KGB headquarters — a powerful symbol of both oppression and freedom.
Note: This tour includes the services of a guide, a food tasting and snack, as well as one glass of beer. Please note that additional food and drinks (such as beer, mead, wine, and kvass) are not included and can be purchased separately. The entrance fee to the KGB Museum (€4 per person) and a public transport ticket (€1 per person) are also not included in the tour price.
After the tour, enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Trip to Kaunas with Art Deco Museum
In the morning, meet your driver and head to Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city (approximately 1.5 hours drive). Upon arrival, meet your local guide for a 2-hour walking tour through the charming Old Town. Stroll along narrow cobbled streets lined with Gothic churches and medieval merchant houses. Visit the mid-14th-century Kaunas Castle, which once played a key role in the city’s defense, and admire the historic City Hall—affectionately called the "White Swan"—on the main square. Continue along Liberty Boulevard, a pedestrian-friendly street dotted with quaint cafes and historic buildings.
The tour also includes a visit to the impressive Kaunas Cathedral, the largest Gothic building in Lithuania, and a scenic walk along the banks of the Nemunas River, offering wonderful views and a sense of the city's natural beauty. The experience concludes with a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Old Town, giving you a final appreciation of Kaunas’ rich history and layered architecture.
After a lunch break, make your way to the Art Deco Museum (self-arranged), where you’ll be welcomed by a local guide for a 2-hour immersive tour. Located in a restored 1929 apartment, the museum features preserved original elements such as oak parquet, decorative tiles, wall colors, and even 14 historic doors. The space is decorated with Art Deco and National Style motifs and filled with authentic furniture, utensils, and machinery from the First Republic era.
As you explore each restored room, your guide will bring the interwar period to life, sharing stories of daily life, craftsmanship, and design. The experience ends in the salon, where you’ll relax with a drink and sit on original interwar furniture, capturing the spirit of 1920s Kaunas. After this enriching day, your driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Vilnius.
Please note: Kaunas Castle is closed on Mondays and Sundays. Availability of the private Art Deco Museum tour must be confirmed at the time of booking.
