Golden Circle Trip: Reykjavík to Selfoss

In the morning, after breakfast and check-out, you will pick up your rental car and begin your scenic self-drive from Reykjavik to Selfoss, transforming the journey into a premium Golden Circle experience at your own pace.

Your first recommended stop is the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir National Park. A place of immense national pride, Thingvellir holds deep historical significance as the site of the world’s oldest existing parliament, the Althing, first assembled in 930 AD and held here for nearly nine centuries. Beyond its history, the park is geologically extraordinary. Located within a rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, it offers a striking visual representation of continental drift. The area is also home to Thingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake, framed by lava fields and rugged scenery.

Continue toward the geothermal wonderland of Geysir, where steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and erupting geysers create a dramatic landscape. Here, you can witness Strokkur, one of the world’s most active geysers, which erupts every few minutes, sending hot water high into the air.

Next, visit the breathtaking Gullfoss, the iconic “Golden Falls.” This powerful two-tiered waterfall plunges into a deep canyon, offering impressive viewpoints and unforgettable photo opportunities.

Before reaching Selfoss, consider stopping at Fridheimar, a unique geothermal tomato farm where innovative greenhouse techniques allow fresh produce to thrive in Iceland’s climate. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a light lunch or simply explore the greenhouse environment.

After a full day of history, geology, and natural beauty, continue your relaxed drive to Selfoss for your overnight stay.
