Continue toward the waterfront, stopping at Mission Bay and Bastion Point for beautiful coastal views. Today, you leave Auckland and begin your scenic drive south toward Rotorua, a region famous for its geothermal landscapes, Māori culture, and lakeside scenery. The route takes you through the fertile countryside of the Waikato Region, known for its rolling green hills and dairy farms. Along the way, you’ll pass charming rural towns and beautiful natural areas that offer excellent opportunities to stop, stretch your legs, and enjoy the landscape before arriving in Rotorua.

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour and Arrival in Rotorua
We highly recommend adding the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour to your journey. Explore the enchanting world of Middle-earth with a guided walking tour past colourful Hobbit Holes, including Bag End, and wander along Bagshot Row, peeking inside a Hobbit’s home.
Conclude your adventure at the Green Dragon Inn, where you can enjoy a complimentary drink from the Hobbit Southfarthing range—a perfect way to toast your Middle-earth experience.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Self-Drive Exploration
Today we recommend a visit to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland—perfect for a self-drive adventure. After breakfast, make your way to this stunning geothermal park, famous for its vibrant colours ranging from bright orange to deep emerald green. The landscape is scattered with fascinating thermal features, including steaming lakes, bubbling mud, and unique volcanic terrain.
Don’t miss the “Mud Pool”, the site of a large mud volcano eroded in the 1920s, where you can enjoy the captivating sounds of bubbling mud up close.
