Auckland to Rotorua Scenic Route

Today, you leave Auckland and begin your scenic drive south toward Rotorua, a region famous for its geothermal landscapes, Māori culture, and lakeside scenery. The route takes you through the fertile countryside of the Waikato Region, known for its rolling green hills and dairy farms. Along the way, you’ll pass charming rural towns and beautiful natural areas that offer excellent opportunities to stop, stretch your legs, and enjoy the landscape before arriving in Rotorua.

Scenic stops en route:

• Hamilton – the largest city in the Waikato region and a pleasant halfway stop. If time allows, visit the beautiful Hamilton Gardens, famous for its themed garden collections from around the world.
• Tirau – a small rural town known for its quirky corrugated-iron buildings shaped like a sheep and a dog. It’s a popular stop for coffee, local crafts, and photos.
• Lake Karapiro – a picturesque lake just south of Cambridge, surrounded by rolling countryside. It’s a great place for a short break and to enjoy views of the calm waters often used for rowing events.
• Hobbiton Movie Set – step into the magical world of Middle-earth at the iconic movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Stroll past charming hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and lush gardens, making this a must-see stop for fans and families alike.

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour and Arrival in Rotorua

We highly recommend adding the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour to your journey. Explore the enchanting world of Middle-earth with a guided walking tour past colourful Hobbit Holes, including Bag End, and wander along Bagshot Row, peeking inside a Hobbit’s home.

Rotorua to Napier Scenic Drive

Today, you depart Rotorua and head toward Napier, passing through the scenic Hawke’s Bay region, renowned for its vineyards, stunning coastal views, and rich art deco heritage. As you drive through lush farmland and rolling hills, you’ll see why this area is one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions, offering plenty of opportunities to explore and relax along the way.

• Hawke’s Bay Wine Region – with over 30 cellar doors, this is one of the best wine regions in New Zealand. Take a vineyard tour, where you can discover some of the area’s finest wines without worrying about driving.

Arrival In Napier

Arrive in Napier, a charming coastal town known for its Art Deco architecture. Napier to Taupō Scenic Drive

Today, you depart Napier and head inland toward Taupō, passing through the lush landscape of the Hawke’s Bay and the Central North Island. This journey takes you through scenic farmland, rolling hills, and forests, with Taupō waiting at the end as a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and water lovers alike.

Today, you depart Taupō and head north towards Hamilton, passing through picturesque farmland and the rolling hills of the Central North Island.
