Lord of the Rings Edoras Exploration

This morning, set out from Christchurch on a scenic self-drive adventure into the Canterbury high country, heading to Mount Sunday—the filming location of Edoras from The Lord of the Rings. The journey is around 250 km round trip, so we recommend starting early, bringing a picnic, and ensuring you have a full tank of fuel.

Drive across the Canterbury Plains toward the Southern Alps, with optional stops at Rakaia Gorge for stunning river views and Methven for fuel and refreshments before continuing into more remote landscapes. As you enter the Hakatere Conservation Area, you can pause at Lake Clearwater for beautiful alpine scenery.

Upon arrival, take a short walk across a suspension bridge and hike up to the summit (45–60 minutes return), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of mountains and valleys.

Enjoy some time to relax and take in the scenery before returning to Christchurch (approx. 2.5–3 hours).

Christchurch to Kaikoura Scenic Route

Today, you depart Christchurch and head north toward Kaikoura, a stunning coastal town renowned for its marine wildlife and dramatic landscapes. The drive takes you through the beautiful Canterbury Plains, with distant views of the Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Waipara Valley – one of New Zealand's up-and-coming wine regions. You can stop at a local vineyard for a wine tasting or simply enjoy the scenic views of the rolling hills and grapevines.
  • Cheviot – as you continue on your journey, pass through Cheviot, a quaint town nestled between farmland and the coast. The surrounding landscape offers a peaceful respite with views of rugged hills and valleys.

This morning, we recommend taking the opportunity to experience one of Kaikōura’s most iconic activities—whale watching. Known as one of the world’s premier destinations for marine life encounters, Kaikōura offers the chance to see majestic whales year-round, along with dolphins, seals, and a variety of seabirds. Set against the dramatic backdrop where mountains meet the ocean, this is truly a memorable experience.

Afterwards, continue your scenic self-drive north toward Picton, enjoying one of the most beautiful coastal routes on the South Island. The road winds along the shoreline before leading through rolling countryside, with ever-changing views of the ocean and mountains. As you approach the Marlborough region, the landscape softens into vineyard-covered hills and picturesque scenery, marking a relaxing and scenic end to your day.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Kaikoura Coastline – as you leave Kaikoura, continue to enjoy the dramatic coastline, where the road hugs the shoreline. Keep an eye out for seals basking in the sun on the rocks or dolphins frolicking in the waves, adding a bit of wildlife magic to your journey.

  • Cape Foulwind – If time permits, make a detour to Cape Foulwind, just north of Westport. Here, you can take a short walk to the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the Tasman Sea. This spot is also known for its seal colony, where you can see seals basking on the rocks or playing in the surf.

  • Lake Mahinapua – Just south of Hokitika, you can take a brief detour to Lake Mahinapua, a peaceful lake surrounded by lush forest. It's a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy some quiet time by the water.
