Christchurch to Kaikoura Scenic Route

Today, you depart Christchurch and head north toward Kaikoura, a stunning coastal town renowned for its marine wildlife and dramatic landscapes. The drive takes you through the beautiful Canterbury Plains, with distant views of the Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean.

Scenic stops en route:

• Waipara Valley – one of New Zealand's up-and-coming wine regions. You can stop at a local vineyard for a wine tasting or simply enjoy the scenic views of the rolling hills and grapevines.
• Cheviot – as you continue on your journey, pass through Cheviot, a quaint town nestled between farmland and the coast. The surrounding landscape offers a peaceful respite with views of rugged hills and valleys.

Driving time: approx. 2.5–3 hours (around 180–200 km depending on route).

Arrival in Kaikoura
Welcome to Kaikoura, a coastal gem renowned for its stunning marine life and dramatic landscapes. As you approach, the drive becomes even more spectacular, with the road hugging the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the rugged cliffs and the vast Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for seals sunbathing along the shore as you make your way into town.

Upon arrival, you’ll be immersed in Kaikoura’s natural beauty. Take the opportunity to relax by the sea, soaking in the peaceful coastal atmosphere.

Kaikoura to Picton Scenic Route

This morning, we recommend taking the opportunity to experience one of Kaikōura’s most iconic activities—whale watching. Known as one of the world’s premier destinations for marine life encounters, Kaikōura offers the chance to see majestic whales year-round, along with dolphins, seals, and a variety of seabirds. Set against the dramatic backdrop where mountains meet the ocean, this is truly a memorable experience.

Afterwards, continue your scenic self-drive north toward Picton, enjoying one of the most beautiful coastal routes on the South Island. The road winds along the shoreline before leading through rolling countryside, with ever-changing views of the ocean and mountains. As you approach the Marlborough region, the landscape softens into vineyard-covered hills and picturesque scenery, marking a relaxing and scenic end to your day.

Scenic stops en route:

• Kaikoura Coastline – as you leave Kaikoura, continue to enjoy the dramatic coastline, where the road hugs the shoreline. Keep an eye out for seals basking in the sun on the rocks or dolphins frolicking in the waves, adding a bit of wildlife magic to your journey.
• Glenburn – a great stop along the way is Glenburn, a peaceful spot to stretch your legs and take in the views of the ocean and surrounding countryside. This is a perfect place to snap a few photos of the natural beauty.
• Marlborough Wine Region – as you approach Blenheim, the heart of Marlborough’s wine country, you can detour into the vineyards for a wine tasting experience. The region is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, and stopping at one of the many wineries along the way offers a great chance to sample local wines and enjoy the scenic views of the rolling hills covered with grapevines.

Arrival in Nelson

Nelson to Hokitika Scenic Route

Today, you depart Nelson and head south toward Hokitika, traveling along the stunning West Coast. The drive takes you through picturesque landscapes, from lush rainforests and rugged coastlines to charming towns. The journey is filled with natural beauty, offering plenty of opportunities to explore along the way.

Scenic stops en route:

• Cape Foulwind – If time permits, make a detour to Cape Foulwind, just north of Westport. Here, you can take a short walk to the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the Tasman Sea. This spot is also known for its seal colony, where you can see seals basking on the rocks or playing in the surf.
• West Coast Wilderness – As you continue south, drive through the dense rainforest and dramatic coastal scenery of the West Coast Wilderness. The road winds through towering trees and offers glimpses of the sea on one side and lush greenery on the other.

• Lake Mahinapua – Just south of Hokitika, you can take a brief detour to Lake Mahinapua, a peaceful lake surrounded by lush forest. It's a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy some quiet time by the water.

• Haast Pass – As you leave Franz Josef, you'll travel through the picturesque Haast Pass, a mountain pass that cuts through the Southern Alps. Stop at the Blue Pools for a short walk to crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and native forest.
