Lord of the Rings Edoras Exploration
This morning, set out from Christchurch on a scenic self-drive adventure into the Canterbury high country, heading to Mount Sunday—the filming location of Edoras from The Lord of the Rings. The journey is around 250 km round trip, so we recommend starting early, bringing a picnic, and ensuring you have a full tank of fuel.
Drive across the Canterbury Plains toward the Southern Alps, with optional stops at Rakaia Gorge for stunning river views and Methven for fuel and refreshments before continuing into more remote landscapes. As you enter the Hakatere Conservation Area, you can pause at Lake Clearwater for beautiful alpine scenery.
Upon arrival, take a short walk across a suspension bridge and hike up to the summit (45–60 minutes return), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of mountains and valleys.
Enjoy some time to relax and take in the scenery before returning to Christchurch (approx. 2.5–3 hours).

Kaikoura to Picton Scenic Route
This morning, we recommend taking the opportunity to experience one of Kaikōura’s most iconic activities—whale watching. Known as one of the world’s premier destinations for marine life encounters, Kaikōura offers the chance to see majestic whales year-round, along with dolphins, seals, and a variety of seabirds. Set against the dramatic backdrop where mountains meet the ocean, this is truly a memorable experience.
