day 4 Palermo

Palermo to Agrigento: Discover Ancient Sicily

After breakfast and check-out, depart Palermo and begin your scenic drive toward southeastern Sicily.

Route tip: Head southwest from Palermo on the A29 autostrada toward Mazara del Vallo, then peel off south to hug the lower coast through Selinunte before swinging east to Agrigento on the SS115. This is the longer, more dramatic route — ancient Greek colonies planted along a coast of wild beaches, the ruins of Selinunte rising from a clifftop above the Mediterranean, and the Valley of the Temples waiting at the end.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Segesta (~40 min southwest of Palermo) - The Doric temple of Segesta, built c. 420 BC by the Elymians, stands unfinished on a lonely hillside, its columns enduring 2,400 years amid sky and mountains.
  • Selinunte (~1.5 hrs from Palermo) - The ruins of ancient Selinunte occupy a vast clifftop promontory above the Mediterranean — the largest Greek archaeological park in the world, covering nearly 270 hectares.
  • Agrigento — Valley of the Temples arrival - After Segesta and Selinunte, arriving at the Valle dei Templi is the culmination of a day-long immersion in Magna Graecia. Seven Doric temples — the best-preserved ensemble of ancient Greek architecture outside Greece itself.

Driving distance: 200 km
Estimated time: approx. 2.5 hours (excluding scenic stops)

day 4 Agrigento

Arrival
Arrive in Agrigento, a city renowned for its ancient Greek heritage and the spectacular Valley of the Temples.

Enjoy time for a self-guided exploration of this extraordinary UNESCO-listed archaeological park, where remarkably preserved Greek temples stand majestically overlooking the countryside.

You may also visit the stunning Scala dei Turchi cliffs. This dazzling white limestone formation, shaped naturally into sweeping “steps,” rises about 50 meters above the sea. Its brilliant colour against the turquoise water makes it look almost sculpted by hand.

From Ancient Temples to Roman Mosaics: Agrigento to Syracuse

Travel from Agrigento to Syracuse, enjoying one of Sicily’s most scenic drives across the island’s southeastern landscapes.

Route tip: Head east then climb inland through the Val di Noto — the zone rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in Sicilian baroque, producing the most extraordinary concentration of baroque architecture in the world.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Piazza Armerina — Villa Romana del Casale (~1 hr northeast of Agrigento) - It preserves over 3,500 square metres of Roman mosaic floors — the largest and most complex figurative mosaic collection in the world — in near-perfect condition beneath glass walkways.
  • Caltagirone (~1.5 hrs from Agrigento) - One of the eight Val di Noto UNESCO cities, known for the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte — 142 steps climbing the hillside between the upper and lower towns, each riser faced with a uniquely hand-painted ceramic tile.
  • Noto (~2 hrs from Agrigento) - The most unified baroque city in the world — designed in a single generation after the 1693 earthquake on a completely fresh site.
Don't miss: The cathedral staircase, the extravagantly carved balcony corbels of Palazzo Villadorata, and a granita al limone from the Bar Caffè Sicilia — one of the finest pasticcerie in Sicily.

Driving distance: 210 km
Estimated time: approx. 2.5 hours (excluding scenic stops)

Scenic Coastal Drive from Syracuse to Taormina

After breakfast and check-out, depart Syracuse and drive north along Sicily’s eastern coast.

Route tip: Head north from Syracuse on the SS114 along the Ionian coast — the ancient road connecting Greek colony to Greek colony along Sicily's eastern shore.

Scenic stops en route:

  • Catania (~1 hr from Syracuse) - Sicily's second city and one of its most viscerally alive. Catania was buried under Etna's lava in 1669, then destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, and rebuilt entirely in black lava stone baroque — a city that looks like no other in Italy.
  • Acireale & the Riviera dei Ciclopi ~(20 min north of Catania) - The stretch of coast between Catania and Acireale is known as the Riviera dei Ciclopi — named for the jagged black lava sea stacks rising from the water, identified in antiquity as the rocks hurled by the blinded Cyclops Polyphemus at Odysseus's escaping ship.
