Greece Travel Tips

Money & ATMs

Greece uses the Euro (€) as its official currency. You can exchange your currency for Euros before your trip or withdraw them from ATMs in Greece.

ATMs are widely available in cities, tourist destinations, and even at some transportation hubs like airports. They typically operate 24/7 and accept major international networks like Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus, Plus, and Maestro. However, it's wise to check with your bank beforehand about potential international transaction fees and inform it of your travel dates to avoid any issues with using your card abroad.

There are no fee-free ATMs in Greece. Expect to pay a withdrawal fee of €1.5 to €2 per transaction, with €1.8 being the most common. So, when using an ATM, choose the option to see the conversion rate in Euros before finalizing the transaction. This helps you avoid any hidden fees from dynamic currency conversion. Furthermore, ATMs typically have withdrawal limits per transaction, ranging from €600 to €840. Some machines may allow higher withdrawals depending on your card's daily limit.

An alternative to ATMs is Credit and Debit Cards. Cards are widely accepted in most urban areas of Greece, especially in tourist destinations. However, smaller towns and villages might rely more on cash, so carrying some Euros is always a good idea.

Consider pre-loading a travel card like Revolut or Wise with Euros before your trip. These cards often offer competitive exchange rates and lower withdrawal fees compared to using your regular debit card directly at ATMs.
