Ireland Travel Tips

Preparation Checklist

Preparing for a trip to Ireland? Here’s a handy checklist to ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable journey. From essential documents to local tips, this guide covers all the key points to help you get ready for your trip.
  • Passport and Visa

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay. For Ireland, US citizens can travel without a visa for up to 90 days. US travelers may need to apply for an Irish ESTA for short stays. EU citizens don’t need a visa or ESTA. For Northern Ireland, US citizens can enter with a valid US passport and don’t need a visa for short stays. EU citizens can use an ID card to enter. Always check the latest entry requirements before you travel!
  • Travel Insurance

Get travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, cancellations, and unexpected events. If you’re planning outdoor activities, confirm that your policy includes coverage. You can easily do so via our partners at Allianz.
  • Emergency Numbers

Dial 999 or 112 for police, fire, or ambulance, available 24/7 across the UK & Ireland. Both numbers work nationwide, and calls are free. Our customer support line is available:
    +1 (954) 787 5105

    +41 55 539 18 88

  • Currency

In Ireland, the currency is the Euro (€). In Northern Ireland, it's the Pound Sterling (£), as part of the UK.. Card and contactless payments are widely accepted, but smaller shops and markets may prefer cash, so it's a good idea to carry a small amount of cash.
  • Language

In Ireland, the official languages are Irish (Gaelic) and English, with English being the most widely spoken. In Northern Ireland, it is English, although Irish and Ulster Scots are also spoken in some areas. Learning a few local phrases and familiarising yourself with regional accents will enhance your experience.
  • Weather & Clothing

Both Ireland and Northern Ireland have a mild, temperate climate with frequent rainfall. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable shoes for walking. Winters are cool, and summers are generally mild, making these items suitable year-round.
  • Electrical Adapters

In both Ireland and Northern Ireland, the power voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz, and the plug type is G (three rectangular prongs). Make sure to bring a suitable adapter if your devices use a different plug type.
  • Mobile Coverage

Check with your mobile provider about international roaming charges. Prepare for your upcoming trip by purchasing an e-sim plan on the Airalo app. It's a more affordable and convenient option compared to local SIM cards or international fees.
  • Travel Documents

Organize essential travel documents, including flight tickets, hotel reservations, transportation passes, and any tour or activity bookings. Keep copies of important documents such as your passport, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.

You can also download our Firebird App to view all of your trip-related documents and details in one place online or offline! The app is available in both the App Store and Google Play.
  • Driving Direction

Traffic drives on the left in both countries. Always look right first when crossing roads, and pay attention to pedestrian signals and road markings that indicate "Look Right" or "Look Left" at crossings. If you hire a car, remember to drive on the left, give way to the right on roundabouts, and take extra care when turning across traffic if you're accustomed to right-hand driving.
  • Local Customs & Etiquette

Friendliness and politeness are highly valued. When meeting someone, a handshake is common. Punctuality is appreciated, especially for business or formal events. Tipping is customary, with around 10-15% expected in restaurants if service is not included. It’s also polite to greet people with “please” and “thank you.” Keep in mind that Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so the customs may slightly reflect British norms.

By following this preparation checklist, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience
