Japan Travel Tips

Preparation Checklist

To make the most of your adventure in Japan, careful planning and preparation are essential. This comprehensive checklist serves as your guide to ensure a seamless and memorable journey, covering everything from travel documents to health precautions and local customs. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned explorer, let this checklist be your roadmap to unlocking the wonders of Japan with confidence and ease.
  • Passport and Visa

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay in Japan. Check visa requirements for your nationality and apply for a visa if necessary.
  • Travel Insurance

Purchase travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances during your trip to Japan. You can easily do so via our partners at Allianz.
  • Currency

Familiarize yourself with the Japanese currency, the yen (ยฅ), and consider exchanging some currency before your trip. Alternatively, bring an internationally accepted debit or credit card for ATM withdrawals in Japan.
  • Language

Learn some basic Japanese phrases or download translation apps to facilitate communication. Consider renting a portable Wi-Fi device or purchasing a SIM card for internet access during your stay.
  • Weather & Clothing

Check the weather forecast for your travel dates and pack accordingly. Japan experiences four distinct seasons, so layering clothing is advisable. Don't forget to bring an umbrella or raincoat, especially during the rainy season in June and the typhoon season in late summer and early autumn.
  • Electrical Adapters

Japan uses Type A and Type B electrical outlets with a voltage of 100 volts and a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. Bring a suitable adapter for your electronic devices if necessary.
  • Mobile Coverage

Research mobile coverage and data options in Japan. Many areas have excellent 4G coverage, but rural or mountainous regions may have limited service. Consider renting a portable Wi-Fi device for reliable internet access during your travels. Prepare for your upcoming trip by purchasing an e-sim plan on the Airalo app. It's a more affordable and convenient option compared to local SIM cards or international fees.
  • Travel Documents

Organize essential travel documents, including flight tickets, hotel reservations, transportation passes, and any tour or activity bookings. Keep copies of important documents such as your passport, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.

You can also download our Firebird App to view all of your trip-related documents and details in one place online or offline! The app is available in both the App Store and Google Play.
  • Luggage Transfer

Transferring your luggage from one hotel to the next is simple:
    1. Visit the luggage transfer desk in the hotel lobby (available in all hotels).
    2. Provide the delivery details - name and address of your next hotel.
    3. Pay the transfer fee, typically around $20 per bag.
    4. Drop off your bags and collect them at your next hotel the following day!
Note: Delivery usually takes one day (next-day service, not same-day).
  • Local Customs & Etiquette

Familiarize yourself with Japanese customs and etiquette, such as bowing, removing shoes before entering homes or certain establishments, and respectful behavior in public spaces.
  • Reversed Traffic

Remember that traffic in Japan moves on the left side of the road. Take caution when crossing streets and familiarize yourself with traffic signs and signals to ensure your safety.
