South Korea Travel Tips

Preparation Checklist

Preparing for a trip to South Korea? Hereโ€™s a handy checklist to ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable journey. From essential documents to local tips, this guide covers all the key points to help you get ready for your trip.
  • Passport and Visa

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay. Depending on your nationality, you may require a visa, so itโ€™s essential to check the requirements in advance and apply early if needed. The US, UK, and EU member states, benefit from visa-free entry for short-term visits (usually up to 90 days).
  • Travel Insurance

Get travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, cancellations, and unexpected events. If youโ€™re planning outdoor activities, confirm that your policy includes coverage. You can easily do so via our partners at Allianz.
  • Emergency Numbers

Familiarise yourself with local emergency numbers. Short dial 112 is for police, and 119 is for medical and fire assistance. Keep these numbers accessible throughout your trip. Additionally, our customer support line is available:
    +1 (954) 787 5105

    +41 553 391 888

  • Currency

South Korea uses the South Korean Won (KRW). Credit cards are widely accepted, but itโ€™s helpful to carry some cash, especially in rural areas. Make sure to inform your bank about your upcoming travel.
  • Language

Korean is the official language. English is spoken in major tourist areas, however, a translation app or phrasebook can be useful.
  • Weather & Clothing

Pack according to the season. Light layers work well in spring and autumn, summer requires lightweight clothing and rain gear, while winter calls for warm coats and thermal layers.
  • Electrical Adapters

South Korea uses 220V with Type C and F sockets. Bring a suitable adapter if your devices use different plugs.
  • Mobile Coverage

Check with your mobile provider about international roaming charges. Prepare for your upcoming trip by purchasing an e-sim plan on the Airalo app. It's a more affordable and convenient option compared to local SIM cards or international fees.
  • Travel Documents

Organize essential travel documents, including flight tickets, hotel reservations, transportation passes, and any tour or activity bookings. Keep copies of important documents such as your passport, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.

You can also download our Firebird App to view all of your trip-related documents and details in one place online or offline! The app is available in both the App Store and Google Play.
  • Local Customs & Etiquette

Tipping is not common, though some high-end restaurants and hotels may add a service charge. When it comes to local customs, bow when greeting or thanking, remove shoes before entering homes and certain restaurants, use both hands when giving or receiving items, and avoid pointing with your finger.
