Latin America Travel Tips

Preparation Checklist

Preparing for a trip to Latin America? Here’s a handy checklist to ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable journey. From essential documents to local tips, this guide covers all the key points to help you get ready for your trip.
  • Passport and Visa

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, and most EU countries do not need to arrange a visa in advance. Each country in Latin America may have specific visa requirements depending on your nationality, so check whether you need a visa before arriving in Chile, Peru, Argentina, or Brazil.
  • Travel Insurance

Get travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, cancellations, and unexpected events. If you’re planning outdoor activities, confirm that your policy includes coverage. You can easily do so via our partners at Allianz.
  • Safety Precautions & Emergency Numbers

Familiarise yourself with local emergency numbers and safety precautions. Additionally, our customer support line is available:

  • Currency

Each Latin American country has its own currency, which can be accessed through ATMs. Carrying some cash for small transactions, especially in rural areas where card payments may not be accepted, is advisable.
  • Language

Spanish is spoken in Chile, Peru, and Argentina, although regional variations exist. In Brazil, the primary language is Portuguese. It’s helpful to learn a few basic phrases in both Spanish and Portuguese to communicate with locals, particularly if you’re traveling to less touristy areas.
  • Weather & Clothing

The weather can vary greatly depending on the region. Brazil’s coastal areas are generally hot and humid, while the Andes mountains in Chile and Peru can be much cooler, especially in the evenings. If you’re heading to the rainforests or coastal regions, packing light and breathable clothing, along with waterproof items, is essential. For cooler areas, ensure you bring warm layers.
  • Electrical Adapters

Chile, Argentina, and Brazil use different plug types (Type C, I, and N), and the voltage is typically 220V. It’s advisable to bring a universal travel adapter to charge your devices, ensuring compatibility with local sockets.
  • Mobile Coverage

Check with your mobile provider about international roaming charges. Prepare for your upcoming trip by purchasing an e-sim plan on the Airalo app. It's a more affordable and convenient option compared to local SIM cards or international fees.
  • Travel Documents

Organize essential travel documents, including flight tickets, hotel reservations, transportation passes, and any tour or activity bookings. Keep copies of important documents such as your passport, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.

You can also download our Firebird App to view all of your trip-related documents and details in one place online or offline! The app is available in both the App Store and Google Play.
  • Local Customs & Etiquette

Be respectful of local traditions and customs. In many South American countries, a handshake or a kiss on the cheek is a typical greeting, especially among close acquaintances. Modesty in dress is important, especially in religious sites or rural areas. It’s also vital to respect indigenous cultures, particularly in Peru, where there is a strong indigenous presence.
