New Zealand Travel Tips

Preparation Checklist

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, being well-prepared is important. This comprehensive checklist covers everything you need to know before you go. Use this guide to help you prepare for your stay in one of the World's most fascinating countries.
  • Passport and Visa

Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Check if you need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) to enter New Zealand, and apply well in advance.
  • Travel Insurance

Purchase travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances during your trip. Verify if it includes coverage for outdoor activities if you plan to engage in them. You can easily do so via our partners at Allianz.
  • Currency

The currency in New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). While itโ€™s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases, credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage.
  • Language

English is the predominant language spoken in New Zealand, and Mฤori is also an official language, so you might encounter it in names and signs.
  • Weather & Clothing

New Zealandโ€™s weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers to accommodate varying conditions. In summer (December to February), bring light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen. In winter (June to August), pack warm clothing, especially if visiting the South Island or planning on skiing. Waterproof jackets and sturdy shoes are essential year-round.
  • Electrical Adapters

New Zealand uses Type I electrical outlets, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Bring a suitable power adapter and voltage converter if necessary for your devices.
  • Mobile Coverage

For mobile coverage, consider purchasing a local SIM card for better rates on calls, texts, and data. Prepare for your upcoming trip by purchasing an e-sim plan on the Airalo app. It's a more affordable and convenient option compared to local SIM cards or international fees.
  • Travel Documents

Organize essential travel documents, including flight tickets, hotel reservations, transportation passes, and any tour or activity bookings. Keep copies of important documents such as your passport, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.

You can also download our Firebird App to view all of your trip-related documents and details in one place online or offline! The app is available in both the App Store and Google Play.
  • Local Customs & Etiquette

Respect the local customs and traditions of both Mฤori and European New Zealanders. Remove your shoes before entering someoneโ€™s home and be punctual for appointments and social gatherings. Be mindful of environmental conservation practices, such as recycling and following Leave No Trace principles in natural areas.
  • Traffic Direction

Familiarize yourself with New Zealandโ€™s driving laws if you plan on renting a car, including driving on the left side of the road.
