Norway Travel Tips

Money & ATMs

The official currency in Norway is the Norwegian krone (NOK). ATMs are widely available in major cities and towns throughout the country, making it easy to access cash during your travels. Look for ATMs connected to major international networks like Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus, or Maestro. Be aware that ATM fees may apply for foreign transactions, so it's a good idea to check with your bank beforehand to understand any potential charges. While Norway is known for its safety, it's still wise to use ATMs located in well-lit and populated areas, and to be cautious of your surroundings when withdrawing cash.

Credit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted across Norway, including in restaurants, shops, and hotels. However, American Express and Discover cards might be less commonly accepted, so carrying an alternative card is recommended. In fact, Norway is a largely cashless society, and card payments are often preferred over cash.

Although some places might accept euros or other major currencies, it's advisable to exchange your money for Norwegian krone to avoid unfavorable exchange rates. Currency exchange services can be found at airports, banks, and currency exchange offices in larger cities.

Traveler's checks are rarely used in Norway and can be difficult to cash. It's generally more convenient to rely on credit cards or withdraw cash from ATMs during your stay.
