UK & Ireland Travel Tips

Tipping Etiquette

In both the UK and Ireland, it is customary to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the total bill in restaurants, especially if the service was good. However, some restaurants include a service charge, so check your bill before tipping.

Tipping is not mandatory in pubs and bars, but it is appreciated if you receive table service or if the bartender goes out of their way to provide excellent service. In these cases, rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip is common.

It is customary to tip hotel staff such as porters and housekeeping. A tip of ยฃ1-ยฃ2 (or โ‚ฌ) per bag for porters and ยฃ1-ยฃ2 (or โ‚ฌ) per day for housekeeping is standard in both the UK and Ireland.

Tipping taxi drivers is common in both countries, but it is not expected. If you received exceptional service or the driver helped with luggage, rounding up the fare to the nearest pound or adding a 10% tip is appreciated.

If you take a guided tour or use a private driver service, tipping is at your discretion. A tip of ยฃ5-ยฃ10 (or โ‚ฌ) per person for a full-day tour or service is typical if you were satisfied with the experience. In other service-based industries such as hair salons, spas, and cafes, tipping is less common but appreciated if you feel the service was exceptional.
