Sa Dec, Vietnam

Sa Dec, a hidden gem in the Mekong delta, is a city in Đồng Tháp Province of southern Vietnam. This city is an important river port, agricultural and industrial trading center of Vietnam.

It was the capital of Dong Khau Dao in the 19 century, known as one of the largest cities in the Mekong Delta. Sa Dec became a world famous town as it was the site of an American PBR (Patrol Boat, River) base during the Vietnam War.

Apart from its vital commercial importance to the country, Sa Dec is more known today by its literary legacy - it is the original setting of the famous autobiographical novel “The Lover” by Marguerite Duras.

All in all, this comparatively peaceful tiny city with tree-lined streets and fading colonial villas, ringed with orchards and flower markets, is a perfect place to wander and make discoveries of mysterious and oriental Vietnam.
