Dublin Castle: History & Facts

Built back in the 13th century, the Dublin Castle is a monumental piece of heritage providing tales not only about the history of the city but the entire country as well. Built as a medieval fortress, it later served as the seat of the English Administration and residence for the British monarch's Irish representative. Nowadays it is the venue for Presidential Inaugurations, as well as a major tourist attraction.

The Dublin Castle was actually built on the location of a former Viking settlement and featured a fortified wall, along with several towers, one of which stands on site to this day. After the Great Fire in 1684, the castle was reconstructed and transformed into a palace, adding the Georgian-style State Apartments to the ensemble.
