The Historical Dublin Castle

Built back in the 13th century, the Dublin Castle is a monumental piece of heritage providing tales not only about the history of the city but the entire country as well. Built as a medieval fortress, it later served as the seat of the English Administration and residence for the British monarch's Irish representative. Nowadays it is the venue for Presidential Inaugurations, as well as a major tourist attraction.

The Dublin Castle was actually built on the location of a former Viking settlement and featured a fortified wall, along with several towers, one of which stands on site to this day. After the Great Fire in 1684, the castle was reconstructed and transformed into a palace, adding the Georgian-style State Apartments to the ensemble.

The rooms inside the imposing fortified walls are lavishly decorated, providing a luxurious interior and numerous pieces of art. Strolling along the halls will surely take you back in time and make you feel like royalty!

While exploring the premises of the castle, don't miss the chance to admire the medieval garden and the Chapel Royal as well. In addition to that, the Chester Beatty Library nearby should also be on your Dublin itinerary, as it houses a unique collection of manuscripts and other exhibits.
