Why Visit Mariefred & Gripsholm Castle
The charming city called Mariefred, located right beside the Stockholm on the banks of lake Mälaren attracts the guests with its narrow streets, colorful low wooden houses, boatmen's' cottages and its biggest pride - the Gripsholm Castle, which lies on the other side of the lake.
The Gripsholm Castle, which is now a museum, houses the National Portrait Gallery of Sweden.
It was built in 1537 and commissioned by the Swedish king Gustav Vasa. The 16th-century interiors of the castle are among Sweden’s greatest Renaissance treasures, filled with treasures, unique legacy and over four-hundred years of history.
The Gripsholm Castle offers romantic grounds, an impressive nature reserve and collections of furniture, handicrafts, and interiors from four centuries.
